The band have been hard at work for the last few weeks preparing for the Miners’ Welfare Brass Band Entertainment Contest. The band were drawn second and played an exciting 20 minute entertainment programme. A good day out followed by a good result with the band being placed 6th out of 12. Special thanks to the band and their Musical Director for all their hard work. Congratulations to the winning band – Lewis Merthyr however a sad moment of rememberance for the miners that sadly lost their lives this week, our thoughts are with all their families.

Happy New Year to you all, 2011 was another busy year for the Gwaun Cae Gurwen Band, thanks to all the band members and their Musical Director for all their hard work.

Once again our Annual Christmas Concert was a great success and the band was well received by a large audience with highlights of the evening being the presentation of awards. Richard Lewis (Repiano Cornet) received an award for ‘Player of the Year’ presented by Colin Hogg Musical Director and a second award was presented to Ffion Halfpenny (Solo Horn) for the ‘Most Improved Player 2011′ Congratulations to both players.
Engagements are now up in the events calendar and some events already confirmed for towards the end of the year.

The first Welsh League Contest of the season took place at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre yesterday and playing off a number 4 draw the band were relieved and generally pleased with their performance with noteable solos by Dylan Bale (Solo Euphonium) and Teifion Davies (Principle Cornet) We had some new faces playing for the first time and some of our players in new positions and therefore the band were not too disappointed with being placed 4th out of 5.

Playing off a number 9 draw, the band produced a quality performance at the Welsh Regional Championships and it toke nerves of steel in the quiet playing, best band of the day went to Llwydcoed and GCG Band were placed a disappointing 9th out of 10.
Practices are going well for the Welsh Regional Championships, we would like to welcome back our dedicated percussionist Malcolm Davies after a successful recovery from a hip operation.
Last month saw the band perform at St Mary’s Church, Clydach. The evening’s concert featured Pontardawe Welsh Primary School. A full house audience gave a warm reception to the band and the school, with the highlight of the evening being the presentation of awards. Ben Lewis who received an award for Player of the year presented by Musical Director Glyn Rhys Davies, and a second award presented to Jamie Reynolds for the Most Improved Player. Congratulations to both players.
